Did you know the VP PTA sponsors our beautiful school garden?  The upkeep is a labor of love but certainly worth it when you see the excitement on the children's faces.

Thank you to the VP PTA and our Garden Chair Meg Whitbeck for this beautiful treasure.

The VP Garden is a wonderful school-wide project that all of the Veterans Park children enjoy!

During the Fall season, 3rd-5th grade classes each have a series of 4 garden lessons.

-Approximately every 2 weeks, the classes spend 45 minutes in the garden learning about composting, plant life cycles, pollinators, garden care, Native American history, garden mapping, the water cycle and more.

-The students plant seeds (radishes, cover crops and cold-hearty greens) and harvest/eat (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, herbs, carrots, kale and more).

The K-2 classes will also get some time in the garden during the fall for exploring and observation.

During the Spring, the schedule is reversed, with K-2 getting a series of 4 lessons and grades 3-5 making some quick visits to the garden.

Almost all students have the opportunity to try tomatoes, cucumbers & peppers.

Grade-level activities are incorporated into the curriculum.

3rd grade students write a story from the perspective of their favorite plant.

4th grade students learn about the Three Sisters Garden and ground fresh cornmeal.

5th grade students learn how to make a balanced compost.

Many of these items are harvested and used in our school cafeteria!
Ask your kids about the garden!
